Hardiest Winter Cannabis Strains

We recently had a look at how to best grow cannabis in the winter, but now let’s have a chat about which strains are best for cold weather growing. A large part of growing in the winter is having the right strain to work with. If you decide to use something that likes tropical temperatures it won’t survive two seconds in a cold climate. There are a variety of cold weather strains available and it can be tricky to choose the perfect one for you. So I have put together a list of the most popular winter strains and hopefully one of them is ideal for your cold-weather garden.

Northern Lights

Let’s get started with one of the worlds overall favourite strains which just happens to be ideal for winter growing. Despite it already being a great cold-weather strain I have gone with the autoflowering variety. Autoflowering plants have a shorter flowering time and skip the vegetative stage which makes them more likely to survive the winter. This strain, in particular, is extremely hardy due to its impressive Afghani genetics. Despite her hardy nature, she will probably still need an indoor grow space in a really cold climate. Warmer countries that have less severe winters are still perfect if you want to grow her outdoors. This strain has been around since the 1970s and if you want something that definitely won’t disappoint she’s your girl. Her effect is an uplifting and relaxing full body high which is ideal for kicking off a new year. The THC level sits at around 14% so she is strong but not overwhelming. She is also probably one of the easiest strains to grow so if it’s your first time winter growing this is the strain to go with. She has a flowering time of 9 – 10 weeks and can be grown indoors or outdoors in warmer climates.

White Widow

Why stop at just one absolute legend, White Widow is another well known and super popular strain that is great for winter growing. She is also one of the hardiest strains on the market and this version is the express autoflowering. She has an extremely short flowering time which gives her the edge during winter. White Widow is famous for being able to grow in almost any environment so you don’t need to worry too much about treating her with kid gloves. One of the best things about her is how festive she looks with her thick layer of crystalline resin that looks like a fresh frost. She has an extremely physical and relaxing high that is great for evening or bedtime use. The THC level again is around 25% with this baby so she hits hard. A good strain for beginners as long as they want to go right to bed after they smoke. Another easy to grow strain, so good for the challenges of winter. This strain will flower in an amazing 7 weeks and is great for indoor or outdoor winter growing.

Wild Rose

This strain comes from a combination of beautiful mountain strains, namely Rosetta Stone and The Hog. Since she is a mountain plant she is hardy and perfect for cold weather growing, indoors or outdoors. Her uniqueness is definitely a selling point, especially her deliciously sweet flavour and odour which are a combination of different fresh fruits. Her high is intensely relaxing and she is recommended for use after a long cold day. Whether you’ve been working and haven’t seen the sun or have been on a frosty winter hike you can sink into your favourite chair with a cup of tea and just reset. Despite being relaxing she is Sativa dominant so she won’t immediately send you to sleep. Her THC content is usually pretty high so ideal for experienced smokers. She is also an award winner and took the 1st Prize for Interior at the 9th Cannarian Cannabis Cup in 2009. She has a flowering time of just 9 weeks and can be grown indoors or outdoors during the winter.

Pakistani Chitral Kush

This is another gorgeous mountain strain and despite being an Indica dominant strain it can take some pretty low temperatures. This one is a pure Pakistani Landrace strain so she comes directly from the mountains. These types of strains adapt impressively to different growing environments so Pakistani Chitral Kush is the ideal winter strain. The other great aspect of this strain is that it is used to temperature changes. Most strains will get messed up if there is more than a 4 degree C temperature change, but not this plant. When it is grown in colder weather it also takes on a lovely purple colour which really brings out the sparkling resin later in the flowering stage. This is the strain for Indica lovers and its effect can be pretty powerful, a fantastic nighttime strain. Pakistani Chitral Kush has a flowering time of 56 – 63 days and is perfect for growing indoors or outdoors in the winter months.

OG Kush

Let’s finish up with another classic strain that can adapt to almost any growing environment. This strain is powerful and Indica dominant, most commonly known as a medicinal strain but also very popular with recreational smokers. OG Kush is a small but efficient plant that grows well in a variety of weather conditions. If you are a medicinal user that wants to grow in the winter this could be a good option, especially if you suffer from Parkinson’s, depression, or PTSD. The effect is very chill and sleepy, a great strain for bedtime if you struggle to sleep due to pain or mental health issues. The THC level on OG Kush is usually pretty high, around 24%, so could be a little overwhelming to beginners. The flavour and scent are perfect for winter, a combination of pine, lemon, wood, citrus and diesel. This strain has a flowering time of just 8 weeks and during winter can be grown indoors, outdoors or in a greenhouse.
