Cannabis strain names can sometimes sound like someone threw a bakery menu, a fruit bowl and a genetics textbook into a blender.
Cherry Cookies. Pure Ice Cream. Sour Aloha. Honeyed Cream Dream. Memorable names, certainly. Their published family trees, however, tell us much more.
Rather than simply repeating four product descriptions, this guide compares their stated parentage side by side, identifies a repeated direct parent in the published pedigrees and explains how common cannabis breeding notation helps us read the family tree.

Who are Pure Instinto?
The Pure Instinto story starts before the Pure Instinto name itself.
According to Pure Instinto’s own current history, a group of friends were living in Amsterdam and working across cannabis-related businesses, including seed banks and coffee shops, in 2008.
The breeder then says that in 2018 the group combined the experience, knowledge and contacts built through those careers to open its own business. That is when Pure Instinto says Pure Instinto was created.
That distinction clears up a surprisingly easy point of confusion. Some retailer descriptions have used 2008 as the founding date. Pure Instinto’s current primary-source account is more specific: 2008 describes the team’s Amsterdam industry roots; 2018 describes the creation of Pure Instinto.
Pure Instinto also says its seed lines are created from elite clones or selections made from regular seeds, with an ongoing focus on stabilising genetics before release.
For this guide, the interesting part is what happens when we stop looking at strain names as isolated products and begin comparing the parentage Pure Instinto publishes for them.

How do you read a cannabis pedigree?
You don’t need a genetics degree, a white coat or one of those enormous detective boards covered in red string.
Parent A × Parent B
When a breeder publishes a lineage as Parent A × Parent B, it is identifying those two names as the direct parental lines for the stated cross.
What do F1 and F2 mean?
F1 is the first filial generation produced from a parental generation. F2 is the second filial generation, produced from F1 individuals. The label identifies a generation; it does not mean every individual in that generation is genetically identical.
What a published pedigree tells us
A breeder-published pedigree identifies the stated parental lines behind a cross. That gives us a useful way to compare direct relationships between the featured genetics and see where their family trees overlap.

Across four two-parent pedigrees there are eight parent positions, but Sunset Sherbet appears twice. That leaves seven distinct parent names across the four crosses.

One of the clearest Cookies-labelled branches in this four-strain comparison.
Cherry Cookies Feminised Seeds are listed by Pure Instinto as Cherry Pie × Girl Scout Cookies F2.
Pure Instinto classifies the variety as indica dominant and publishes an aromatic description of cherry, earthy, sweet and floral notes. The breeder lists THC at 22–24%.
The educational value here is straightforward: unlike a strain name that merely happens to contain “Cookies”, the published pedigree itself explicitly names Girl Scout Cookies F2 as a parent.

Pure Ice Cream
Sunset Sherbet meets Thin Mint Cookies — and the dessert-style name begins to make more sense.
Pure Ice Cream Feminised Seeds are listed as Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint Cookies.
Pure Instinto’s specification table uses the name Thin Mint Cookies, while its descriptive copy also refers to that parent as Girl Scout Cookies Thin Mint. We use the specification-table name consistently in this guide rather than silently switching between the two versions.
The breeder classifies Pure Ice Cream as indica dominant, reports 20–26% THC and describes chocolate, mint, gassy and pine notes.
For our family tree, the important name is Sunset Sherbet. It appears again in the very next strain.

Pure Instinto lists Sour Aloha within its Exotic Line, describes it as an indica dominant hybrid, reports 26–28% THC and gives a sweet, tangy and pine aromatic profile.
Shared parentage shows a relationship. It does not make two crosses interchangeable.

Its published aroma spans sweet, honey, fruity, grape, tropical, creamy, earthy and spicy notes.
Pure Ice Cream and Honeyed Cream Dream may sound as though they belong on the same dessert trolley. Their stated direct pedigrees do not share a parent.

Four names make more sense once you look below the surface
Once the four pedigrees sit side by side, the pattern becomes much easier to see. Different strain names can hide a direct genetic connection, while similar-sounding names can lead down completely different branches.
Pure Ice Cream and Sour Aloha are the clearest example: very different names, but both trace directly to Sunset Sherbet. At the same time, Pure Ice Cream and Honeyed Cream Dream sound like natural relatives yet share no stated direct parent.
That is where the family-tree approach becomes useful. It gives collectors a clearer way to explore modern genetics beyond the name on the pack.
