For decades cannabis has been used for inspiration, especially by those who work in a visual medium. Weed can change the way we see the world as well as the way we think about it. Though we think of weed generally as a good door to creativity, some strains are definitely better suited to the arts than others. These are just a few of the very best strains for sparking creativity and boosting inspiration for the visual arts.

Kali Mist

This is an extremely popular Sativa that is ideal for those of us who are just too wiped out to be creative. Nothing stems the flow of inspiration like having absolutely no energy. Unfortunately, for anyone who doesn’t have the luxury of being a full-time artist, life is likely to get in the way. Kali Mist is bright and euphoric with a beautifully uplifting high that is ideal for anyone who is finding it hard to connect with their inner artist. If you are experiencing creative block this strain can really open up your mind and let it explore new areas. She also produces fantastic yields of dense, fluffy buds covered in THC. She also doesn’t grow too many leaves up top so the light can easily get through to the bottom of the plant. This strain has the added benefit of being fantastic for menstrual cramps. Kali Mist has also won a couple of awards such as first prize of the Cannabis Cup in 1995 (Hydro Cup) and again (with this new and improved version) in 2000 (Seed Company Sativa Cup). She has a flowering time of 10 – 12 weeks and can be grown indoors or in a greenhouse.

Durban Poison

Once again this strain provides a happy and uplifting cerebral high that can open up the mental pathways and let in inspiration. The spicy aniseed flavour goes perfectly with the perky and euphoric high. Durban Poison has never been hybridised and is a 100% Sativa strain ideal for reigniting that spark. Strangely even though it is entirely Sativa it does resemble an Indica strain when it is growing. She can also be pretty powerful and can induce a little visual high, great for painters who want to play with the abstract. The buds are dense, compact and plentiful rewarding even new growers with a fantastic harvest. This strain is very versatile and can be grown indoors, outdoors or in a greenhouse. She has a flowering time of just 8 – 9 weeks.

Chemdog

This is a slightly different type of strain to the others, it isn’t quite as energetic. This is a great strain for anyone who is struggling to relax and so cannot make art. Stress can be a nightmare for creatives and just as bad a creative block as not having any energy. Chemdog has all of that lovely uplifting cerebral effect but is also very chill and a little sedative. Going into a sort of meditative stone can be a great way to come up with ideas for artwork. Another great use for this strain is just getting a good nights sleep. If you have been struggling to come up with ideas due to exhaustion and anxiety Chemdog can give you the rest you need to fire on all cylinders. The THC content usually sits at around 15 – 20% so she can be quite strong for new smokers. She grows well indoors, outdoors or in a greenhouse and has a flowering time of 60 – 65 days.

Jack Herer

This is a great slightly trippy and very powerful strain excellent for painters. This multi-award winner strain is named after Jack Herer the famous cannabis activist and author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes. Jack Herer has taken the coveted first place trophy at the 2004 High Times Cannabis Cup. She has also taken 2nd in two different categories at the 2006 High Times Cannabis Cup. The effect is full-body yet cerebral and very long-lasting so perfect for a long art session. Medicinally this strain is usually used by those who are suffering from pain or a lack of appetite. During growing, she likes room to stretch out those big Sativa branches. She isn’t the easiest plant to grow, especially for beginners, but if you can pull it off she is more than worth it. The THC level sits at around 21% so she can be powerful, especially in larger doses. Indoors her yields usually get up to around 800g/m2 and up to 1200 g/plant when grown outdoors. Jack Herer has an extremely short flowering time of just 8 weeks and can be grown indoors, outdoors in a hot climate, or in a greenhouse.

LSD

For those artists out there who like to get weird with their art, there is LSD. This strain gets her name from the psychedelic visual high which is combined with cerebral euphoria. She won the Indica Cup in 2008 and is famous for her incredible THC level of 25%. If you want to get any real work done maybe don’t go crazy with this girl. However, if you do want to cover your body in paint and throw yourself at a canvas this is a perfect strain. As far as growing her goes she is very resistant to mould and fungus which makes her easy to grow in a bunch of environments. She is an excellent starter strain since she is great at taking care of herself. She also has a pretty decent CBD level of 1 – 5% making her great for medicinal use. Especially for those who are struggling with anxiety, depression or insomnia. LSD was created by combining Skunk #1 and Mazar, both of which are famous for being fantastic strains. Her scent and flavour are quite musky in that classic Skunk way with a powerful flavour of chestnut behind it. She is great for growing in all environments be it a greenhouse, an indoor space, or outdoors. She also has a relatively short flowering time of 60 – 65 days.
