Stereotypically throughout history, cannabis has appeared to be a male-dominated industry. There is something about any drug-related topic that seems to immediately make people think of men. There are, however, countless incredible women who have helped to make cannabis what it is today. Whether they have pioneered cannabis breeding, been well-noted activists or have been a significant part of medicinal and therapeutic cannabis it is time that we celebrated the incredible and talented women of the cannabis industry.

Dr Lakisha Jenkins

It is almost impossible to know where to start on this subject, so let’s go for one of the big players in legalising medicinal marijuana in California. Dr Lakisha Jenkins is known as a master herbalist and was an essential part of creating the cannabis laws in California. Of course, now we all know that California is considered to be one of the pioneers in medicinal cannabis for the US. Dr Jenkins is also a supporter and activist for alternative medicine and traditional therapies.

Mara Gordon

Mara Gordon is the founder of therapeutic cannabis company Aunt Zelda’s. This is a medicinal and therapeutic cannabis company that focuses closely on the needs of the individual patient. As a scientist, Mary was capable of analysing the needs based on the science behind the strains, the correct dosing and the correct cannabinoids for the job. What used to be almost pure speculation became scientifically viable and helped thousands find their ideal medicinal strains and doses. Gordon has been an educational tour de force in the cannabis community and has taught countless patients about the correct way to treat themselves with cannabis. Not only has she helped medicinal users but has provided other companies with the information and structure they need to flourish.

Jessica Peters

Another company founder who is making huge waves in the medicinal aspect of the cannabis industry. Jessica Peters is the CEO of Moxie Meds, a therapeutic company created by women for women. She focuses primarily on strains that lessen the symptoms of PMS, reproductive stress, menopause, hormone-related stress and severe period pain. Peters has been a big player in this department for over 7 years and has provided help and support to women everywhere, something that can be lacking in the medicinal cannabis industry.

Rebecca Maestas

When it comes to the commercial side of the industry Rebecca Maestas is a vital female figure. She has played a vital role in a variety of large cannabis companies and is the reason a number of famous brands have become as popular as they are today. Her first company was Dixie Botanicals, which was the world’s first mainstream hemp produce distributor. She then moved on to become the director of Field Marketing, still working with Dixie Brands. She has also helped to establish Canamixx, a Colorado-based company that helps to provide edible relief to patients in need.

Roza Cazares

Despite being young Roza is the CEO of La Mota, a large group of high-end recreational cannabis shops based in Oregon. Unlike many other shop chains, La Mota takes good care of their products and their customers. They ensure that all cannabis sold is pesticide and chemical-free. These shops have quickly become some of the most popular in the state but Cazares still runs her stores personally, along with the largely female staff.

Dr Chanda Macias

Dr Macias is the CEO of Women Grow, the largest network of cannabis professionals across the US and Canada. This organisation exists to connect cannabis professionals and help to support and launch cannabis businesses. The aim is to primarily support and launch over 1,000 women lead businesses. She is also the CEO of a company called National Holistic which is a dispensary designed specifically to help the individual patient. Those who visit these dispensaries are helped to find the very best cannabis for them and their body.

Priscilla Vilchis

Vilchis owns the Queen of the Desert cannabis brand and is a huge supporter and advocate of cannabis products. She was the first female minority CEO to be awarded both the license to cultivate and the license to produce cannabis products in Nevada. Not only is she the CEO of her own cannabis company, but she is also well versed in medicinal cannabis especially when it comes to pain relief.  She is often found educating physicians on the uses of medicinal cannabis as effective pain relief.

Charlo Greene

Greene is well known in the cannabis industry, not just for her incredible work but for quitting her journalism and reporting position live on air while covering the Alaska Cannabis Club. This reporter turned advocate is not one of the biggest supporters of medicinal cannabis and has made some serious strides in educating the masses. High Times awarded Charlo the Courage in Media award now uses her popular daily talk show to advocate the legalisation of marijuana. She has also recently launched a CBD based beauty line.

Supernova Women

This group was founded by Tsion “Sunshine” Lencho, Amber Senter, Nina Parks, Andrea Unsworth and Isamarie Perez. It is a company designed to help women make their mark on the cannabis industry. The group provides workshops and educational tools to support women in a safe environment. The group also works in tandem with Clean State California to help ex-offenders through advocacy and education.

Pamela Hadfield

Pamela Hadfield founded Hello MD and was one of the first to introduce the benefits of low THC products for physical health. She discovered that low THC products made a huge difference to her migraines and so created a user-friendly way for patients to access the help they need. Through her company, patients can find doctor consultations, support groups, product recommendations and general information to help them with their medical issues.

Unfortunately, we can’t cover all of the incredible women in the modern cannabis industry, and trust me there are a lot more. As always have a go at doing some research of your own, you may discover some truly fascinating and inspirational people.
