Guide To Discreet Growing

guide to discreet growing

Discretion is often extremely important for anyone growing cannabis. It can also be difficult to accomplish. Cannabis smells strong, grows tall and often requires a good amount of equipment to grow. Whether you’re growing indoors or outdoors you will likely want to keep your crop a secret. Though many parts of the world allow for recreational growing, you never know if your neighbours will be ok with it. It is also possible that a nice cannabis plant would be a good enough reason for someone to break into your home. These are a few tips to grow discreetly and keep your crop on the down-low.

Don’t Go Telling People

This may seem completely obvious but you would be surprised. Good news can travel fast so by telling anyone you’re growing you’re putting yourself and your crop at risk. Telling even one person is just a bad idea so it’s best to keep your secret garden just that, secret.

Deal With The Smell

One of the biggest issues with growing is the powerful smell given off by cannabis. Some less so than others, but there is always going to be an extremely distinct odour. First, when growing inside, it’s wise to ensure there is plenty of ventilation in the grow space. You can also purchase carbon filters to fit to your grow room, cupboard or tent to try and neutralise the smell before it gets out. The easiest way to figure out how much ventilation you need is to figure out a few things about the space. Multiply the length, width and height of your grow space then times that by 20 cubic feet per minute. This should let you know the volume of air exchange the space needs to minimise the scent. There are also certain strains that are going to smell much more strongly than others. If you live somewhere where the odour is going to be an issue try to go for a strain that boasts a mild scent. Outdoors it’s a good idea to plant a few other strong-smelling plants in with the weed. These can also be used as companion plants to keep the bugs away. It may not hide the smell but it definitely makes it harder to pin down.

Don’t Show Off Your Plants

Obviously, if you are trying to keep your plants hidden you need to keep them hidden. When growing indoors try not to make the grow room too obvious. Doing things like covering a prominent window with tinfoil is a bit of a giveaway. Probably don’t install a large ventilation set up on a residential home or shine extremely bright grow lights through the windows. If anyone is looking to break into a home to steal weed they know the signs of a grow room. When it comes to outdoor growing you need to think about the strain again. Some strains, mostly Sativas, will grow extremely tall and will definitely appear over the top of your fence or be extremely obvious on your balcony. Autoflowering strains are ideal for anyone who wants a sneaky plant as they usually grow much shorter than other plants.

Use Good Growing Products

The more high-tech the indoor grow room, the harder it is to spot. If you splash out on higher-quality equipment you are less likely to run into issues that may reveal your crop. Cheaper fans, vents, lights etc are more likely to cause blackouts, electrical shorts or fires. Not only do these risk completely destroying your plants but attracting a significant amount of attention to your grow space. It also means that you likely won’t be able to set up a new space without someone noticing.

Reduce Noise

Another aspect of growing that can quickly alert people to what you’re up to is the noise. This actually links to the last point as buying high-quality equipment will reduce the noise pollution from your home. This equipment is on constantly for months so you need something that can stand up to the pressure. Not only can a loud grow room draw attention but it can cause issues with your neighbours. Even if you are growing legally you don’t want the neighbours calling in a noise complaint or demanding you dismantle your grow room. If you are growing hydroponically or using large amounts of equipment you may not want to grow somewhere residential as it’s very tricky to keep the noise down.

Don’t Buy Local

This is the opposite of my usual rule, but if you want to keep things under wraps you really can’t use local shops. If you go to a local grow shop and start buying up all the equipment to grow indoors then it’s pretty clear to everyone what’s going on. Then you’re essentially just putting a target on your back for anyone who might be interested in owning a lot of weed without having to grow it themselves. It can be worth just going a little further to buy anonymously or carefully shop online.

Don’t Sell

This is pretty obvious but I will just say it anyway. If you start selling and word gets around that you grow that could cause serious issues. It is also illegal almost everywhere to sell your own and being raided isn’t the most discreet thing a person can do. If you’re going to grow at home you need to be as safe as possible about it so don’t do anything stupid.

Be Careful Online

If you are going to buy online you might want to be careful where you buy your equipment from. If you just go buying from wherever you could attract a fair bit of unwanted attention. Many of the items you’re buying are relatively innocuous on their own but together it can be a bit obvious what you’re doing.

Growing is always a risk, no matter which part of the world you are growing in it always comes with risks. So be careful, be discrete and make sure your crop is definitely your own.
