Which Seeds to Choose for Display Purposes Only!

With the explosion of the cannabis industry across the globe there has also been an increase in the variety of strains available to consumers. Sometimes it might be confusing and in this article, we will be discussing the types of seeds you can choose from through our wide range available.

Cannabis Sativa .L ( Cannabaceae ) is a plant genus that covers all varieties of cannabis, including hemp. All cannabis cultivars fall under cannabis sativa. This group is broken down into three generally agreed varieties, namely sativa, indica and ruderalis. With the development of technology and the cannabis industry, this commonly used way to distinguish cannabis is slowly falling away and seed breeders are using cannabinoid and terpene profiles to identify plants. However, this is still generally the most common way to identify and distinguish plants. There are also several other categories of seeds and these are known as feminized seeds or auto-flowering seeds.

Differences between Indica and Sativa

Whether cannabis indica or cannabis sativa are separate species we can leave that up to botanists to debate. With the information at hand lets look at the two most popular putative species of cannabis in the Cannabaceae genus of plants.

Indica varieties grow much shorter and bushier than the sativa variety. Their leaves are wide and short, with short wide blades. The flowers that develop during the flowering period are much denser and compact. Flowering times are also much less and an indica can flower for as little as 8 weeks until its ready for harvest. On the other hand, sativa are much larger plants with longer leaves and thin blades. Sativa also has a much longer flowering time and may flower for over 15 weeks depending on their genetics and environment.

Today we have thousands of hybridized cannabis varieties. Often these hybrid cannabis plants are referenced as either indica- or sativa-dominant depending on the strain. They are bred like this for several reasons and some reasons may include but not limited to; taste, aroma, THC or CBD potency, flowering times or even mould resistance.

Cannabis Ruderalis

You were probably wondering why we have not mentioned the variety ruderalis. Well, this is a fairly new “type” of cannabis and was only commercialized at the end of of the 20th century. Ruderalis has a distinctive trait which is that it automatically flowers. Although cannabis sativa .L is a photosensitive plant, ruderalis varieties automatically flower with a very short vegging time.

 Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Cannabis plants have both male and female varieties. These regular seeds offer the grower both sexes when they go into flowering. A popular new type of seed is known as feminised cannabis seeds and these seeds will almost 100% of the time produce female plants. The reason for this is that people mostly grow cannabis for the flowers and the males pollinate female cannabis plants with their pollen and form seeds. Well there you have it, now you have some insight into how cannabis seedbanks breed their cultivars.
