Gelato is a popular Italian frozen dessert made from milk and sugar and with various different flavorings added to the mix. It typically contains more flavoring and less air than other kinds of frozen dessert which distinguishes it from other ice creams. Its creamy and rich flavor is responsible for cannabis strains ‘borrowing’ its name.
Gelato, or also called Larry Bird, is originally a flavor-packed hybrid cross between Sunset Sherbert and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, originating in the USA. Winning cups and awards since it entered the cannabis scene, Gelato has since found its way into many different crosses and is now available in both Indica and Sativa dominant hybrids.
We’ve selected some that we find best and tastiest:
Gelato from Blimburn Seeds is a feminized seed version of a long time clone-only favorite US cannabis strain. It’s a Sativa-dominant hybrid known for its remarkable fruity, dessert-like flavor and high potency, testing as high as 27% THC. It finishes flowering in 8-10 weeks with yields going up to 500g/m2 or 700g per plant. Its bag appeal is increased by colorful, dark-purple and lilac hues.
It’s a cross between Sunset Sherbert, a fruity Indica and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. It was a clone-only strain for a long time, originating from the Bay Area, California and taking the US cannabis scene by a storm. Plants are fast growing, vigorous and versatile with good resistance against mold, mildew and bud rot.
Gelato’s effects are calm, clear and relaxing at first, transitioning into an uplifting, happy and creative, ideal to use throughout the day. Its flavors are sweet and fruity with minty with citric undertones and its aromas are fresh and strong – candy-sweet and floral with hints of earth and herbs. It’s used medicinally to treat stress, depression, anxiety and glaucoma.
Gelato Sorbet from DNA Genetics is a colorful and tasty Indica-dominant hybrid, a cross between Gelato 33 and Sorbet. Probably the tastiest strain from the Sorbet line in DNA Genetics catalog, it will impress even the pickiest of cannabis connoisseurs with its beautiful and rich taste and aromas. Usually testing at 17-22% THC with <1% CBD
Staying short and compact, more on the Indica side of things, it will usually stay below 150cm both indoors and outdoors. Usually growing as a bushy, even canopy from top to bottom but it reacts well to all types of training methods and techniques. Leaves are dark green, often going purple, dark blue or violet as the harvest approaches. Buds are smaller to medium sized but hard, dense and incredibly sticky, stacked closely together.
Flavors are sweet, fruity and candy-like with earthy and woody undertones. Aromas are fresh, pungent, fruity and sweet with hints of citrus and flowers. Effects are creative, uplifting and euphoric, leaving you relaxed and happy.
Wedding Gelato from RQS is an Indica-dominant hybrid, a three way cross between Wedding Cake, Gelato and Gelato 33. With genetic heritage like that, high potency and delicious, rich and flavorful taste are the best traits this strain has to offer. It usually tests between 22 and 25% THC with <1% CBD.
Indoors it stays short, rarely growing more than 100cm, outdoors it’s usually around 150cm but if given enough vegetation time and put into optimal conditions it can grow up to 200cm. Doesn’t stretch that much, staying stocky and compact but with decent collateral and side branching. Due to its heritage, dark green buds will be smaller but tightly packed, dense, hard, sticky, highly potent and smelly.
Effects are balanced between cerebral, creative, euphoric, focused, uplifting and body buzz, calming and relaxing. Flavors are sweet and citrusy with hints of mint, berries and vanilla. Aromas are earthy and woody with lavender and citrusy undertones.
Krippling’s Gelato is Dr. Krippling’s take on the popular US cannabis strain, known for its pungent aromas and favored for its mouth-watering delicious flavors, comes from the Girl Scout Cookies line. Available as feminized seeds, this Indica-dominant cannabis strain will finish flowering in just 7 to 8 weeks with yields going up to 400-500g/m2 and will usually test at around 20% THC.
Krippling’s Gelato is a mix of world known, tasty and flavorful Gelato and Dr. Krippling’s genetics, chosen to further upgrade the plants and offer their take on a US classic. It tends to grow compact and bushy with good side and lateral branching and tight internodal spacing with smelly and sticky buds. Plants do well both indoors and outdoors and have good resistance against mold and mildew which, combined with their ability to recover quickly from all types of training and their forgiving nature when it comes to feeding and watering, makes it a good choice for beginners and less experienced growers.
Krippling’s Gelato’s flavors and aromas are certainly the highlight of the strain and are best described as a combination of chocolate, berries, skunk and diesel, each making a piece of the puzzle. Its effects are uplifting, euphoric, creative, leaving you happy and relaxed, in the right mood to do chores or social activities.
Glue Gelato Auto from Barney’s is a product of crossing the legendary high potency Gorilla Glue with a delicious Gelato and sturdy and high performing Ruderalis. Barney’s Farm has created this delicious, highly potent and medicinal autoflowering strain that will finish in just about 10 weeks.
Glue Gelato Auto is a delicious, mouth-watering Indica-dominant (60%) cross between Gorilla Glue, Gelato and Ruderalis. It usually tests at around 12-15% THC and ~1% CBD which makes it a good strain to use throughout the day when you have things to do without having to worry about getting too high.
Usually growing up to 100cm or 120cm outdoors, it will finish in just up to 9-10 weeks from germination. Yield is 80-250g per plant or 400-600g/m2 when growing in SOG. It likes a lot of sunlight and doesn’t like temperatures dropping below 20C.
Effects are well balanced between uplifting, euphoric and calming and relaxing. Taste and aromas, like most Gelato hybrids, are what distinguishes this strain from the others – rich spicy and chocolate smells with fruity and berry flavor that are delivered in a very smooth package.
Gelato Auto from Fast Buds is an autoflowering Sativa-dominant (55%) cannabis hybrid, available as feminized seeds. With high potency, measuring up to 24% THC, it’s a good choice for both recreational and medical users alike and is probably the most potent autoflower from Fast Buds. Well branched out structure with compact and hard buds will produce heavy yields in just 8 weeks of flowering.
Gelato Auto is a cross between delicious and tasty Gelato and an autoflowering version of Girl Scout Cookies. Both strains are well known for its mouth-watering cookies, ice cream and dessert sweet flavors and high potency so crossing them together couldn’t result in anything less. Plants will have a pyramidal structure with lots of dense and compact, orange pistils covered, vibrant green buds covered with resin.
Gelato Auto’s effects are uplifting, creative, giggly and energetic and its medicinal properties make it a good choice when treating glaucoma, nausea, epilepsy, MS, arthritis, rheumatism and asthma. Its flavors and aromas are a creamy and smooth blend of sweet cookies or ice cream with citrusy undertone and hints of earth and pines.
Blue Gelato 41 from Barney’s Farm is an Indica-dominant cross between Blueberry and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies and Sunset Sherbert focused on high yields. Fresh and fruity aromas will fill out your grow room and if given enough root space and vegetation time it can yield 2-3kg per plant.
By crossing these well known three strains together, Barney’s Farm has managed to create a very high yielding strain that’s loaded with smells and aromas. Usually staying under 150cm but if given enough room and vegetation time, they can easily reach 200cm or more. Usually testing at ~15-18% THC, <1% CBD and ~0.5 CBG. Many phenotypes show purple or blue buds but all end up covered with resinous trichomes.
Effects are mild and soothing, energetic, leaving you focused, motivated and clear headed – a great daily strain. Taste is sweet and citrusy with earthy undertones and smells and aromas are fresh and fruity. It’s being used to treat anxiety, stress, glaucoma, artritis, rheumatism and nausea among others.
Green Gelato from RQS is an Indica-dominant hybrid, a cross between sweet, pungent and orangey Sunset Sherbet and highly potent and flavorful and probably the tastiest phenotype of Girl Scout Cookies – Thin Mint. Truly a work of art, highly potent and incredibly tasty and flavorful. Usually testing at 23-27% THC with <1% CBD.
By crossing two phenomenal, tasty, delicious and potent strains, RQS have created a true gem that will more than satisfy both new users and connoisseurs alike. Incredible sweet taste and flavor and resin production make this strain a popular choice for extraction artists and concentrate producers. Along with great taste and potency comes more than a great yield too, easily exceeding 1g/W indoors. It will form tight, small to medium sized buds that form grape-like clusters from top to bottom. Most plants will exhibit purple, lavender or dark blue colors, especially if exposed to lower night temperatures.
