Best Comedians To Watch While High

One of the best forms of entertainment to enjoy while high is stand up comedy. Sure it’s not for everyone, and comedy is super subjective, but for those of you who enjoy standup it can only be made better with weed. Whether you’re into storytellers, one-liners, offensive comedy, surreal comedy, whatever floats your boat one of these is sure to do it for you. Of course, I have thrown in a little bit of classic stoner stand up, just for when you’re feeling particularly old school.

Nichole Byer

Ok, to be fair I’m listening to her right now, but I absolutely would recommend her standup. Nichole Byer is a high energy comedian who talks about a variety of real-world issues while keeping everything strange and a little silly. She doesn’t take herself too seriously and I will always love hearing her talk about experiencing the comedy industry as a woman. Whether you’re watching one of her specials or listening to her podcast Why Won’t You Date Me? which is all about sex, dating and basically anything else she and her many amazing guests start talking about. If you are easily offended or are sensitive about your masculinity she may not be for you, but I have to say I cannot recommend her highly enough. I’ll also say it’s refreshing to see an offensive comic who never punches down.

Mitch Hedberg

This beautiful man is unfortunately no longer with us but I cannot think of anyone who is better to listen to when you have the giggles. He has a number of live shows that can be found online and you need to go and find them. Mitch Hedberg was, and I think still is, the king on one-liners. Not the cheesy kind of one-liners you might be used to. These are bone dry snippets of wordplay that will leave you thinking for a second before bursting into laughter so hard and suddenly that you make that weird loud quacking noise. No? Just me? Anyway, I will treat you to one of my absolute favourite Mitch Hedberg jokes.

“I haven’t slept for 10 days…because that would be too long.”

I mean obviously, the delivery is important but even writing that made me laugh just remembering the set. Mitch is also ideal for those times when you just want a wholesome stand-up set that won’t make you reflect on yourself as a person or potentially make you cringe. There was nothing offensive or aggressive about Mitch Hedberg which I think is why I found his career all the more impressive.

Maria Bamford

If you like something a little weirder, a little more surreal and yet somehow a little more real then definitely go for Maria Bamford. She talks a good deal about her relationship with her mother, dealing with mental health issues and just a bunch of other strangely relatable life stuff. Plus when she does the upper-class husky white woman voice I do just always lose it. She also has a tv show on Netflix called Lady Dynamite and a fantastic special called The Special Special Special both of which are just a treat, especially when you’re already a little bit stoned.

Katherine Ryan

One of my favourite comedians going at the moment, Katherine Ryan is blunt, crass and just a genius. If you want a comedian that really takes the spotlight back from the men that dominate the stage. She is also regularly fantastic on a variety of panel shows and has her show which is currently on Netflix called Duchess. This is definitely a great choice if you want something a little different from the norm. She definitely forges her own way as a comic and is honestly just one of the funniest people I’ve ever watched.

Doug Benson

If we are talking about ideal stoner comedians Doug Benson has to be at the top of the list. Most of his career is centred around smoking weed which brought us such gems as his podcast Getting Doug With High. He has an excellent special on Netflix called Doug Dynasty which is a great option for those times when you’re super stoned with a group of friends. The fact that Benson is a big fan of weed himself means his comedy tends to gel extremely well with a high brain. There is plenty of variety in his career and pretty much something to suit every discerning stoner.

Dave Chapelle

One can’t really write a list like this without adding Dave Chapelle. Chapelle has been a fan favourite amongst stoners for the entirety of his long and illustrious career. His comedy really has something for everyone. We have the Chapelle Show which was full of easy laugh sketches and jokes, then his stand up specials which tend to deal with more intense and potentially offensive topics. He even has the stoner classic “Half-Baked” which has been always been a big hit with anyone who has been smoking. If you’re just not sure what you’re in the mood for then Dave Chapelle is usually a safe bet.

Zach Galifianakis

If you don’t know his stand up you likely know him as the weird guy from The Hangover series. The charter he played was very much a toned-down version of his weirdness making him a great one to watch while high. His stand up is hilarious, strange and oddly deep in a way that will make you cry with laughter while also considering several aspects of your existence. My personal favourite by Galifianakis is the show Between Two Ferns where he interviews a wide variety of people from Brad Pitt to Barack Obama. I love that no matter who is on his show he will make fun of them equally and there are so many opportunities for fantastic improvised comedy. He has also done a few videos with Tim and Eric that will have you clutching your sides to stop you from splitting, especially if you’re smoking something giggly.
