Best Cannabis Inspired Artists

It is hardly surprising the cannabis is used all over the world as a creative aid. Many strains have been designed specifically to increase creativity and since weed was a thing it has been utilised by artists and musicians. Today we are going to take a quick look at some of the greatest cannabis-inspired artists of our age. These people have worked in a variety of mediums, some as activism and some just as an appreciation for the plant. Whatever reason they had for using cannabis as inspiration, the artwork that has come out of it is truly impressive and beautiful.

Tony Greenhand

Our first artist creates art not only inspired by cannabis but featuring it. His videos are easy to find online and are certainly worth watching. Essentially, Tony rolls incredible and fully smokeable joints in a huge variety of stunning shapes. In fact, he is considered to be one of the worlds greatest joint rollers. He has famously rolled stunning and fully smokeable replicas of Mike Tyson, various animals, various firearms, and just about anything you can think of. I personally am a huge fan of his fully smokeable Frankenstein’s monster. As a person, he has been said to be friendly, charismatic, extremely laid back and just generally a super nice dude. Definitely check out his stuff on Instagram, though his account is private. It is worth requesting a follow to see some of the things he has created.

Chris Burden

Chris Burden was a provocative artist who was at his most famous in the late 70s. Primarily he was known for repeatedly testing his mental and physical limitations through his art. He had a fierce political consciousness and used a number of mediums including performance art to put this across. One of these pieces was entitled Coals To Newcastle an idiom that implies a pointless act. This piece involved him flying two joints in model planes from California to Mexico. This is definitely thought to be amongst his most dangerous and indeed bravest pieces of performance art.

Bunnyfoofee (Leslie K. Monroy)

This is the name of the artists Instagram page which is where they predominantly display their art. This artist does a wide variety of work, all of which is quite beautiful, but I have to say the cannabis-inspired elegant 50s ladies are my favourite. The juxtaposition of the dainty, well-dressed women smoking massive joints is quite powerful imagery. You could argue that these pieces have heavy feminist connotations especially depicting freedom in women at a time where they didn’t have much of it. If you are looking for some slightly more female-centric cannabis art then I would recommend Bunnyfoofee.

Ricardo Cortés

This particular artist works with a medium that not many in the cannabis game do. He actually created a children’s book that is intended to destigmatise marijuana. The book he wrote is titles Marijuana: It’s Just a Plant which he also illustrated. This book is not intended to get kids into the idea of weed from a young age or any other mad accusation someone might make. It was created to remove the stigma which is the most healthy way to introduce kids to drugs. We all come across weed at some point in life, it is safer for those who already understand it. It’s not great for your kids to just learn from some random person who also doesn’t understand much about weed. Knowledge is power.

Fernando de la Rocque

This artist creates his pieces with marijuana smoke, and they are beautiful. He is a Brazillian artist that uses cannabis as inspiration and as a tool to create his artworks. Many agree that his most famous works are those entitled Blow Job in which he depicts various religious figures in cannabis smoke. The art is made using stencils that la Rocque cuts and then blows cannabis smoke onto until the paper becomes discoloured.

Yasmin Bawa

Yasmin Bawa works in sculptures and uses a concoction she has titled hempcrete to create them. This special moulding material was created by mixing hemp, clay and lime. These together create an incredibly flexible and versatile substance that is also much stronger and will last better than regular clay. Yasmin focuses on hemp home wear and furniture as well as a number of beautiful sculptures. You can see all of her work on her website, it is an inspired way to incorporate cannabis into your artwork.

Pierre Schmidt

Now we come to one of my personal favourites, a surrealist artist that uses weed to create his strange and wonderful paintings. Otherwise known as drømsjel, Pierre is an illustrator and digital artist currently living in Berlin. His works are famous for their bizarre beauty and sexuality giving the feeling of erotica on acid. Many of his works are inspired by vintage Penthouse magazines and driven by weed to become something simultaneously exotic and terrifying. Many of his pieces depict beautiful women who are distorted and have various plants growing from their bodies. I like him because you can see the raw outline of his brain through both cannabis and a mild obsession with sex. Worth looking into if you enjoy surrealism as much as I do.

Lesley Hampton

Lesley is a prominent fashion designer who works with size-inclusive designs. Recently she released a cannabis bud inspired collection of sportswear. The idea behind this collection was apparently to cement the idea of cannabis and health being connected. Of course, many people still don’t know how healthy and helpful CBD can be. She was trying to point out that bud can not only be good for your mind but also your physical health. By pasting these images onto her sportswear you could claim that she is making an artistic statement. The gear comes in a variety of sizes as well as styles, with everything from subtle small bud patterns on sports bras to full cannabis jumpers. Perfect for anyone who wants to make a point while they work out.
