Many of these articled are aimed at the veteran smoker and those who have at least some experience in that department. We can sometimes forget that smoking weed for the first time is quite daunting. The media can paint a very dark picture of drugs like weed when it is unlikely that anything will go wrong. However, things can go awry if we aren’t careful. There are certain things that it is good for beginners to know before they get started to make sure they are safe and comfortable.

 

It’s Normal 

 

Not just being nervous, which is of course very normal. Smoking weed is completely normal. A wide variety of people smoke and it isn’t socially considered the illicit drug it is painted as. There is nothing to be scared of as there may be taking a hallucinogenic for the first time. It’s best to relax and remember that it is completely normal and very common.

 

Be Prepared

 

When smoking for the first time it is important to make sure you have everything you need around you. Get snacks in, download a food app, sort out films and tv, get a bunch of comfy things ready. The first time you get high it’s not great to have to move about or do anything, God forbid going outside. If you have everything ready beforehand and can access it all easily you will have a lovely first time.

 

Buddy Up 

 

For the first time smoke, it is usually a good idea to try it with a friend, preferably one that’s used to smoking. If the paranoia does come on it will help a lot to have a person you can ask about whether or not things are normal. It is very easy, if you smoke too much, to imagine that the common symptoms of just being high are something entirely more sinister. It also means that if you do become anxious or paranoid there is someone there to calm you, rather than just your brain telling you that there is a gremlin in the cupboard who wants to remove your eyes. More likely that you’ve forgotten something important or that there is someone in your house, but still.

 

Effect Roulette 

 

This is the last thing we want for the first time and usually comes from just buying some weed rather than choosing a strain. It is important to consider what you want to feel like and try to procure a strain that mirrors that. If you want something energetic, happy and want to avoid the possibility of couch-lock go for a Sativa, if you want something comfy, sleepy, snacky and usually not anxious go for an Indica. It is important to be careful so that you can predict roughly how you are going to feel. Waiting for effects to hit can be anxiety-inducing and so smokers are more likely to have a bad time.

 

No Effect 

 

Another very common aspect of smoking for the first time is not getting high at all. If this happens don’t worry, the second or third time there will almost definitely be an effect. Why this is I’m not certain, but it is very common with first-time smokers. Some say it is to do with your body not having formed cannabinoid receptors. The last thing you want to do is try and smoke way too much to trigger an effect. Any effect triggered by over-smoking will be uncomfortable and unpleasant. We don’t want to get way too high on our first try.

 

Inhaling 

 

This also may not be the easiest thing to get to grips with right away. For those who have smoked cigarettes it will be a little easier, but figuring out smoking takes time. Unlike a cigarette, a joint is drawn into the lungs and held for a moment before releasing. The inhales are also usually deeper but that is completely down to the individual. If you aren’t sure at first just experiment and know that coughing is normal at the start.

 

Don’t Make Plans 

 

No matter how much you know about the strain you don’t know how your body will be affected. My advice is to free an entire evening/night for your first time, don’t plan on doing anything that requires sobering up. Some bodies will keep the high for an hour or so then bounce back, others will hold it for several hours and just be out for the count. To be honest I would leave the next morning free as well because sometimes a stoned sleep can be heavy and lengthy. Meaning that if you have plans in the morning there is a good chance you will sleep through your alarm.

 

Hydrate 

 

It is so important that you drink lots of water while high. Not only because there is a good chance of getting dry mouth but it will ensure your body feels as good as possible while you are stoned. By this same token, it’s a good idea to make sure you have plenty of food. Snacking is an important part of being high, and if you can get some take out so much the better. Even without real munchies food is just so much tastier when stoned.

 

Edibles 

 

The simple thing to say about edibles is don’t. They are not to be played around with and are usually not only much stronger than joints but have a very delayed reaction, so can be misleading. Many long term smokers can still be bowled over by edibles so it’s best to steer clear for the time being.

 

Relax

 

The biggest piece of advice is just to relax. It is completely impossible to overdose on weed and weed-related injuries or illnesses are so incredibly unlikely they aren’t worth considering. Nothing bad can happen if you follow the rules and remember that even if you start to feel a bit wrong you will sober up and you will be fine. Try to sink into the experience and enjoy yourself, you’ll likely have a fabulous time.
