UK / EU Referendum and Shipping

As most of you have probably already heard; the UK held a referendum on the 23rd of June and have voted to leave the European Union by 52% to 48%

I have received a few emails regards this and how it could affect our business operations with particular reference to shipping methods, such as this email from a customer with a question regarding some rumours that seem to be going around regards shipping:

“Hello, I’m a customer from the US. I’ve ordered a few times from the website (www.cannabis-seeds-store.co.uk) and I enjoy and recommend it to many of my friend’s……I’ve heard a rumour about shipping that concerned me.

If i ordered seeds from the UK, the rumour goes, since your no longer part of the EU, packages will be checked more thoroughly for any illegal items. Is this true? I’ve heard rumours like this going around since the UK left the EU. I can’t find any reliable sources, but i figured i would ask just to be sure.

The couple of times I’ve ordered, I had the stealth shipping. If the rumours are true, will the stealth shipping help out? I hope to hear from someone soon. Cheers.”

Short answer:

This sounds like scaremongering most likely being bandied about from Seedbanks outside the UK!  The shipping procedures for UK seedbanks are unaffected.

Long(er) answer:

First of all, EU law still stands in the UK until it ceases being a member – and that process could take some time, probably a few years.

More importantly though Britain could still stay in the single market even if it leaves the EU, but what does that mean?

“The single market is seen by its advocates as the EU’s biggest achievement and one of the main reasons it was set up in the first place.

Britain was a member of a free trade area in Europe before it joined what was then known as the common market. In a free trade area countries can trade with each other without paying tariffs – but it is not a single market because the member states do not have to merge their economies together.

The European Union single market, which was completed in 1992, allows the free movement of goods, services, money and people within the European Union, as if it was a single country.

It is possible to set up a business or take a job anywhere within it. The idea was to boost trade, create jobs and lower prices.”

Also, don’t forget “The referendum result is not legally binding – Parliament still has to pass the laws that will get Britain out of the 28 nation bloc, starting with the repeal of the 1972 European Communities Act. ”

Keep in mind though that this only refers to countries within the EU so the UK to USA shipping procedures will remain unchanged regardless!

So, nothing to worry about in the short term and most likely nothing to worry about in the long term either, as it just doesn’t make sense for shipping procedures to be affected whether the UK is in or out of the EU.
