Background
Coming on the scene as early as the 1970s, Blueberry is one of those strains which really shook up the seed-collecting industry, breaking the rules about what is possible in terms of flavour, quality and appearance.
The strain was created after much experimentation with exotic, pure-bred Sativas, as well as some rare (back in the 1970s) Indicas. After identifying suitable candidates, DJ Short would carry out the following steps to create the magic formula that would lead to the creation of Blueberry:
- A beautiful, now mythical Mexican highland Sativa, known as Highland Oaxaca Gold (HOG) was crossed with a deliciously sweet, Chocolate Thai, resulting in Purple Thai: A sweet, flavoursome and incredibly potent, yet easy-going, purple-tinted hybrid.
- Next, DJ Short took a high-quality, extremely stable Afghani Indica – and crossed it with Purple Thai, to create a high-yielding, fast-to-harvest line which has since passed into legend (DJ Short’s Floral Line)
- To boost the Floral Line further and take things to the next level, DJ Short continued his extensive breeding programme, to produce Temple Flo, which would serve as the Female parent of Blueberry.
- To produce the male parent of Blueberry, DJ Short would continue to work with his favourite Highland Thai Sativa and Afghani Indica strains, ultimately producing Highland Thai Afghani (HTAF)
- With Temple Flo and HTAF now in place, all of the pieces of the puzzle were ready to come together: After blending these two strains, a legend was born: Blueberry!
Blueberry would later form its own line, which has produced many outstanding varieties over the years: But whilst these would all prove to be incredible strains in their own right, Blueberry has reserved a special place in the hearts of many collectors.
In the year 2000, Blueberry won the High Times Cannabis Cup: Decades after it was first created: As good a demonstration as any on its enduring appeal with connoisseurs.
Effects
Whilst being an Indica-dominant strain (80% Indica to 20% Sativa), the high quality of Blueberry’s Sativa heritage shines through in its high, which is uplifting, euphoric and long-lasting, being capable of producing a pleasant effect in even the most seasoned toker. A chilled out, relaxing Indica stone then washes over the mind and body. This mixture of effects makes it excellent for treating stress, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, insomnia and lack of appetite.
Flowering time and yield
A flowering time of 7-8 weeks, makes this a rapid, yet average-yielding strain. Nonetheless, the quality of Blueberry makes up for its medium productivity, with frosty, sticky and deeply aromatic buds becoming evident as the strain finishes. Depending on the conditions in which it is kept, Blueberry will typically display multi-coloured blue, purple and red colouration.
