One of the primary uses of medical marijuana is to reduce the awful side effects of chemotherapy. Chemo can cause a wide range of issues such as weight loss, nausea, vomiting, pain, insomnia, exhaustion, bowel problems, anxiety, depression, really the list is just too long. Cannabis may not have any proven effect on cancer itself, but it is vital in helping cancer patients on chemotherapy maintain some semblance of a normal lifestyle. Whether that be still getting things done and having the ability to maintain productivity, or if it’s just trying to be comfortable and having the ability to relax and rest. These are a few of the most highly recommended cannabis strains for chemotherapy patients*/

Northern Lights

This strain shows up on a lot of our lists but I would be remiss if I didn’t include it here. Northern Lights is well known as one of the best medicinal strains on the market. She has a uniquely powerful relaxing and uplifting effect that is ideal for anyone suffering through chemo. It is often used to combat pain, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and stress. She may not be the best active strain but for anyone who just needs to be able to sit down for an evening, enjoy some tv, and have a decent nights sleep this is one of the best options. Northern Lights has been around since the 1970s so has many decades of use to back her up. This version has a relatively low THC content of 14%, so is ideal for those who aren’t used to smoking. She has a flowering time of 9 – 10 weeks and can be grown indoors or outdoors.

Grandaddy Purple

This is another relaxing strain that is fantastic for getting a good night sleep but also works well as an appetite stimulant. Not only does it stimulate the appetite but it quells accompanying nausea, allowing patients to enjoy a decent meal without repercussions. It also reduces anxiety, pain and stress, all of which go hand in hand with chemotherapy. This strain is ideal for medicinal users who want a much higher THC level. Grandaddy Purple can reach the staggering THC heights of 25 – 35%. After smoking a little of this plant most patients will be hungry, relaxed and just about ready for a full and restful nights sleep. Grandaddy Purple has a flowering time of around 60 – 65 days and can be grown indoors or outdoors.

Chocolope

This strain is on the other end of the effect spectrum and is uplifting, energetic and happy. Chocolope is for cancer patients who are struggling with exhaustion, depression, anxiety and a variety of other side effects. She is a motivating strain that promotes a positive attitude. A good one for days where things just have to be done, but the energy isn’t there. Also for days when sufferers may want to socialise, do some crafts and just enjoy life but are struggling to find the energy. Chocolope is extremely widely used by chemo patients all over the world. She is also a multi-award winner and has taken home High Times Strain of the Year in 2007, 1st in the Hydro Highlife Cup in 2008, 2nd in the Sativa High Time Cannabis Cup in 2010, 2nd Coffeeshop in the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2007, and 2nd in the Hydro Highlife Cup in 2007, 3rd in the Hydro Highlife Cup in 2009, 3rd Coffeeshop in the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2008, 3rd Indoor at Bio Spannabis in 2008, 3rd in the Hollyweed Cup in 2006. She has a flowering time of 63 – 77 days and can be grown indoors, outdoors or in a greenhouse.

Blue Dream

This mix of Blueberry and Haze is one of the most famous medicinal strains on the market. She is well balanced and gives a combination of uplifting happiness and chilled relaxation. An excellent strain for just balancing out symptoms to feel a little normality. There is also good cerebral energy to the strain that allows patients to stay focused. She provides pain and anxiety relief without completely knocking patients out or causing total confusion and couch lock. Her THC content is relatively high at 25% so for many she is an excellent micro-dosing vaping strain. She tops herself up well and is long-lasting so holds the soft, pain-free high over several hours. She was created by combining Blueberry, Super Silver Haze, Afghani, Thai and Mexican which explains her fantastic quality. She has a flowering time of 65 – 70 days and will grow indoors or outdoors.

UBC Chemo

UBC Chemo, also known as simply Chemo, is a highly therapeutic strain created in Canada specifically to help cancer patients. The effect is strong, cerebral and physical with a high Indica percentage. It was first created in the 1970s and has remained popular with cancer patients ever since. Her THC level usually sits at around 29% so she is one of the stronger medicinal strains. For those who are used to using medicinal marijuana, this can be the best strain for full relief. It primarily treats pain, insomnia and depression but is also very often used to stimulate appetite and suppress nausea. Another great strain for a comfortable evening in with snacks and a good film. She also has a deliciously rich and earthy flavour which just increases the enjoyment of the smoke. This strain has a flowering time of 56 – 63 days and grows best indoors.

These are just a few of the wonderful medicinal strains available, but each patient is different and it may take longer to find the perfect strain. Cannabis is also still being researched and scientists are discovering many incredible sides to medicinal cannabis for cancer patients. Currently, it is thought that weed may slow the spread and growth of cancer cells as well as aiding in suppressing the nastier side effects of chemo. As always keep an eye on the medicinal cannabis side of science as it is constantly changing and evolving. We still have no idea what this magical plant could be capable of.
