A dry herb vaporizer is a special e-cig used for vaping dry herbs. Unlike regular e-cigs, dry herb vaporizers don’t use oil or liquid cartridges. Instead, they use dried matter from cannabis and other herbal extracts.

You administer dry herbs (usually in the form of ground powder) into the device and then turn the device on to heat the substance. As the substance heats up, it vaporizes, and you inhale the vapour the same way you would with any regular vaporizer.

This article shall highlight how to use a dry herb vaporizer, but first things first.

Types of Dry Herb Vaporizers:

Dry herb vaporizers are categorized based on two major parameters – portability and mode of operation. In terms of portability, we have portable and desktop dry herb vaporizers.

A portable dry herb e-vaporizer is sometimes also known as the vape pen. As the name implies, these gadgets are characterized by their small, compact, and lightweight design. However, they tend to hold smaller amounts of vape herbs compared to their desktop counterparts.

On the other hand, desktop dry herb vaporizers are larger, bulkier, and come with a plug-in power source. Therefore, they’re suitable for use at home. Desktop dry herb e-cigs are designed using advanced technology and can hold a substantial amount of powder, making them ideal for long-haul vaping sessions.

When it comes to the mode of operation, dry herb vaporizers work by either conduction or convection methods.

In the conduction method, the herbal extracts are heated by direct contact, usually by use of an open flame in the heating chamber. On the other hand, the convection method uses gas or liquid. The liquid or gas is heated first, then the hot air generated is circulated over the dry herb. Dry herb vaporizers that work by conduction method are generally more affordable than those that operate by convection. They’re also easier to use, which makes them beginner-friendly.

However, convection dry herb vaporizers are more efficient at temperature regulation. The convection method ensures that heat is distributed evenly throughout the powder, which enhances how you savour the flavours in the herbs.

Why Use Dry Herb Vaporizers?

There are numerous benefits of using dry herb vaporizers. Most notably, these devices allow you to experiment with fuller flavours and tastes.

Also, dry herb vaporizers are considerably less toxic than their oil- and liquid-based counterparts. That’s because you consume herbs in their unadulterated forms. Remember that in the case of e-liquids, the substance would need to go through some refining first. In the process, toxins may be introduced into the liquid in the name of flavour-enhancers or preservatives.

Another benefit of dry herb vaporizers like Herb-e vaporizer is that they’re generally cheap. These vaporizers feature a more simplistic and cheaper design compared to liquid-based e-cigs. Also, dry herbs are cheaper than most standard vape juices.

How to Use a Dry Herb Vaporizer

Read the manual

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a seasoned vaper or a newbie, reading the manual will get you familiarized with certain important details about how your dry herb vaporizer works.

The manual might help to clue you in on the recommended batteries to use with the vaporizer, how to clean the device, etc.

Grind your herb

Grinding your herb increases its surface area to volume ratio, thereby increasing the amount of dry herb that your vaporizer can hold.

Grinding also ensures a uniform distribution of heat throughout the herbal extracts.

Charge the battery

Many dry herb vaporizers come with a USB cable for charging their batteries. Some vaporizers may also operate using removable batteries.

Whichever the case, resist the temptation of using your dry herb vaporizer while charging the device. Doing so might heat the device further and increase the risks of explosions.

Fill the chamber

After grinding your dry herb, add the ground powder to the dry herb chamber. The chambers of most dry herb e-cigs come with a cover or special cap. You’ll need to remove this cover to load your powder into the chamber.

You can load the powder using your fingers, a small funnel, or a tiny scoop. However, be sure not to overfill the chamber, especially if you’re using a conduction dry herb vaporizer. It’s necessary to allow ample room for air to pass through the chamber for uniform heat distribution.

Heat up the vaporizer

Unlike oil- or liquid-based e-cigs, a dry herb vaporizer doesn’t heat up immediately. The device can take as little as 10 seconds or as much as 2 minutes to heat up completely, depending on its size and specifications. Even so, you want to experiment with lower temperatures first.

Start with the lowest temperature and note how it affects the flavours of your vape herbs. As you shall find, most dry herb vaporizers are designed with temperature settings ranging from 315 to 440 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ideally, you should set your device to temperatures that ensure maximum vapour production and a smoother throat hit.

Enjoy the experience

Once the device has heated up, you can now begin to savour your vaping experience. The actual vaping process is pretty much similar to vaping any e-cig.

You place your lips over the vaporizer’s mouthpiece and draw air from the device slowly and steadily, taking breaks in between. The convention is to inhale and hold the vapour in your lungs for a few seconds before exhaling.

Turn off the heat

It’s important to turn off the power of your device immediately after each vaping session, then allow it to cool.

Doing so prevents any residual powder from getting used up. Plus, it also prolongs the duration of your vaporizer.

Store the device

Once your dry herb vaporizer has cooled off completely, store it in a cool and dry place. You can remove any unused herbal extracts and store them in a cool, dry, and darkroom.

Remember that sunlight may oxidize certain compounds like cannabis extracts, thereby promoting their degradation.

Bonus tip: It’s important to clean your dry herb vaporizer every week for regular vapers, or at least once a month for everyone else. When cleaning the gadget, focus on the oven and the mouthpiece.

Be sure to clean the oven while it’s still hot to prevent the residues from cooling down, thereby hardening and becoming difficult to dislodge. When it comes to the mouthpiece, use isopropyl alcohol and q-tips.
