Cannabis Growing UK

So here we are, in the year 2020 and we’re all still asking this question: ‘Can I Grow Cannabis in The UK? In this blog post we will take a look at some of the latest news and official information around the answer to this question.

Based on many surveys its thought that the majority of people in the UK would favour legalisation. It’s been illegal in the UK since 1928. That means we as a business need to operate properly within the bounds of the law!

If you’re a long term reader of Vault Blogs or regularly enter our promo’s you’ll notice we tail everything off with the following:

Remember: It is illegal to germinate cannabis seeds in many countries including the UK.  It is our duty to inform you of this fact and to urge you to obey all of your local laws to the letter.  The Vault only ever sells or sends out seeds for souvenir, collection or novelty purposes.

So the key reason that we are able to sell you seeds is that we sell them as souvenirs. This is completely legal to do in the UK. We bolster that by not offering up any growing or germination techniques that might be seen to encourage this and therefore break the law. Even if you call our customer service team for this advice, we will politely refuse to answer.

Based on a quick visit to the GOV.uk website, we can see a perfectly clear statement around the Possession of Drugs. Cannabis is singled out by saying;

Police can issue a warning or an on-the-spot fine of £90 if you’re found with cannabis.

Now when it comes to growing and subsequently selling Cannabis it is stated that you will receive criminal penalties and potential prison time for cultivation.

There’s also zero tolerance for driving under the influence so beware of this.

So what would happen if you got caught with Cannabis Plants? Well, if you happened to be raided and you were unable to prove they were for medicinal benefits, then you could be looking at a prison sentence. If it were to be just a couple of plants for personal use, you may just get a caution however, that’s under the discretion of the police. Anything over 9 plants would be considered something more than a domestic operation and you could find yourself in trouble for this.

As a good summary for the current situation this 2020 article from The Sun Newspaper lets us know more. Some of the key elements are:

  • Being convicted of producing and supplying the Class B drug carries up to 14 years behind bars, an unlimited fine, or both.
  • Police can issue a warning or on-the-spot fine if you’re caught with a small amount – generally less than one ounce – if it is deemed for personal use.
  • Prosecution rates for cannabis possession are as low as 15 per cent in Cornwall and Devon, while Durham Police have said they will no longer target recreational users at all.
  • Doctors were given the go ahead to prescribe medical cannabis in 2018.
  • Cannabis was by some distance the most commonly used drug, with 6.5 per cent of adults aged between 16 and 59 smoking in the previous year

We’re always keen to hear your own thoughts and experiences when it comes to the legal side of Cannabis in the UK or your own country for that matter. The true answer to the question of ‘Can You Grow Cannabis in The UK’ is of course yes BUT, can you grow it legally, NO. Always take into account your local laws.

The Vault is always on the side of legalisation from both a medical and recreational standpoint. Until then, we do and will, of course, abide by the law.

  1. My wife has had a stem cell transplant last year and she is using rso oil. It helps her massively. She can be very temperamental without it. It helps her sleep. Takes away the pain.
