1988 saw the first official High Times Cannabis Cup which was judged by grow guru Dr Indoors, a photographer and Steven Hager.
There was Four Seed companies entered in to the first Cannabis Cup ‘Super Sativa Seed Club’, ‘Sensi Seed Club’, ‘The Seed Bank’ and a late entry from ‘Cultivators Choice’ who went on to win the Cannabis Cup with Skunk #1.
The 1989 Cannabis Cup seen the same four seed companies entered however with more samples, the judging panel grew from 3 to 6 people that included Ed Rosenthal and Patty Collins. The Seed Bank swept the board winning all awards with strains ‘Big Bud x Skunk #1’ (Early Pearl x Skunk #1) x (Northern Lights 5 x Haze).
The 1990 Cannabis Cup was won by the Seed Bank with ‘NL #5 x Skunk’, this was also the first time that world class art work was created for the Cannabis Cup.
In 1991 the Cannabis Cup somewhat of a ‘coffeeshop crawl’ as many of the seeds companies seemed to go underground and refused to enter the cup an eventual winner was found with Free City taking the plaudits with Skunk Balls.
The 1992 Cannabis Cup so the return of the seed companies, however ‘Neville’s Seed Bank’ had been incorporated into ‘Ben Donkers’ Sensi Seed Club, which resulted in the Sensi Seed Bank, the eventual winner of the 5th Cannabis Cup was Homegrown Fantasy for ;Haze/Skunk’.
The Cannabis Cup in 1993 had a smaller budget than previous cups and seen four seed companies enter which were Dutch Passion, NHV, Nirvana and Sensi Seed Bank, fifteen coffeeshops from Amsterdam and seven from outside also entered, the eventual winner of the Cannabis cup was won by Dronkers’ Sensi Seed Bank however Arjan’s from Green House made a strong Debut.
The 7th Cannabis cup in 1994 seen Sensi Seed Bank operate a tour to Cannabis Castle, where Nevil bred many of his award-winning strains. The Eventual winner was Sensi Seeds with Jack Herer, with second place taken by Green House Tolstraat with Citral Skunk and Grey Area took third place with AK-47.
In 1995 the Cannabis Cup attracted 1,500 judges and seen entries from 21 coffeeshops, two breeders from the USA, one entry from Canada, one entry from Switzerland and five seed companies which were Sensi Seed Bank, Serious Seeds, Dutch Passion, Sagarmatha Seeds and Seeds of Courage. The eventual winner was Green House Tolstraat for their White Widow, second place was taken by Grey Area with their Bubblegum strain, third place was taken by Darren Morgan with B.C. Bud.
The 9th Cannabis cup held in 1996 was hampered by new limitations on cannabis imposed under the plans to unify Europe’s Currencies. The winner of the cup was eventually announced to be De Dampkring, second place was taken by Green Prisoners and third place was taken by Green House Tolstraat.
1997 seen the Cannabis Cup Band steal the show with a four hour tribute to Bob Marley, the winner of the 1997 Cannabis Cup was De Dampkring with Peace Maker, second place was Green House Tolstraat with Great White Shark, with Bluebird taking third place with Warlock.
The 1998 Cannabis Cup seen some controversy when De Dampkring pulled out of the event citing that the event had become too commercial and expensive to compete in, first place was taken by Green House Tolstraat with Super Silver Haze they also took second place with El Nino and third place was taken by Grey Area with Grey Mist.
The 1999 Cannabis Cup seen coffeeshop owners being giving the owner of voting for the seed companies, first place was taken by Green House Tolstraat with Super Silver Haze.
