Hailing from Northern California, OG Kush has gained notoriety the world over for its distinct smell and for its high potency. This stain has so many unique qualities that it really cannot be compared with anything else out there. Its true genetics are not known. Some speculate that it might be a mix of ChemDawg, Pakistani Kush and Lemon Thai. Others think it to be a variant of ChemDawg dating back to the early 1990s. Even the meaning of its name is the subject of debate with some claiming that it means, “Original Gangster.” Because of where it originates, however, it is more likely to stand for, “Ocean Grown.”
Regardless of any of the arguments that circulate about it, there is one thing that is beyond dispute: this is one seriously popular cannabis strain. From Hollywood's elite to pop culture icons to... probably your next-door neighbour and your average medical marijuana user, OG Kush gets lots of love. One thing that sets OG Kush apart is its uniquely strong, dank, aroma with a hint of sweetness and citrusy tang. Its flavour is just as dank and strong with an aftertaste that really lingers. What makes it even more complex is that it is predominantly indica, and yet it behaves like a sativa.
Flower time for OG Kush is about 8 weeks on average and yields hover around 65 grams per plant. The plants are known to stretch a bit as they grow, but they soon begin to fill out as they flower. In general, plants can reach heights of 2.5-3.5 feet (about 70 to 100 cm). The buds are big, dense and green and form attractive clusters that are become covered with shimmery resin when fully mature. The reasons to grow OG Kush are many, not the least of which being that this variety is feminised, making it even more appealing, even to novice growers.
O.G. Kush is said to have originated in California, which makes sense when it comes to the name, although original accounts differ it is now thought to stand for 'Ocean Grown.' Its exact make up remains a mystery with some saying that it is a combination of Pakistani Kush, Lemon Thai, and Chemdawg, although it is certain that this type is Indica dominant, containing both Indica and Sativa properties. O.G. Kush is particularly famous for its citrusy aroma, as well as the fact that its colouring will change based on its environment. One thing that is for sure however, is that it will produce fluffy buds which are packed full of resin, clear signs of its Sativa genes. Another reason why O.G Kush is so popular is the fact that it can be used for a variety of medical ailments such as depression, PTSD, and even Parkinson's Disease. As well as this it is rather simple to grow although it does have certain nutritional needs. Indoors it can grow up to 1 metre in height and even higher outdoors where it prefers a warm sunny climate. Indoors it will usually produce a yield of around 65gr per plant.
Royal Queen Seeds have also seen to make O.G. Kush feminised, making it even easier to grow. Feminised simply means that there is an almost 100% chance that all of the seeds will be female, which is useful because in reality the males serve no real purpose, unless a grower wished to breed their own crop. Regular seeds usually end up with an even amount of males and females, and so a grower may waste valuable time, space, and money, on male plants which are not needed for cultivation. Even if a person needed the male pollen in order to breed a future crop, it is possible, through a careful process, to manipulate the females into producing this pollen. However it should be made clear that this venture is only likely to be successful for the most experienced growers.
Please remember that the growing of cannabis plants and the cultivation of seeds is illegal in some countries – please check the laws of your country and don’t be growing any plants if it is against your country’s laws.
